Does Swollen Tonsil Post Anal Sex Signify HIV Infection?

Hello, Dr I had unprotected anal sex with a guy who said he is not gay. After 10 days later, I have a swollen tonsil on my left side. There is no febrile, no swollen lymph nodes, no fatigue, no rash. I do have history of tonsillitis and nearly every year. Could you tell me please can it rule out I have hiv infection? Thank you very much.

Hello dear,

First of all, HIV infection cannot be diagnosed only on the basis of symptoms.
Given the history that you have tonsillitis nearly every year, the symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to either upper respiratory tract infection or acute tonsillitis.
It can be managed by a course of antibiotics.
Kindly consult an ENT specialist for proper clinical examination.

However, to relieve your concern regarding HIV infection, you can undergo certain tests like p24 assay or PCR for HIV, which becomes positive within a week and are almost 100 % sensitive.
Even the presence of a single virus in the body can be detected by PCR.
So, if this test comes negative, you can be sure that you are safe.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
