Does Swelling Of The Diaphragm Due To A Fall Mean Diaphragmatic Rupture?

I had a fall on the stairs four months ago and suffered a crush fracture. At the same time we noticed that my stomach (particularly diaphragm) area was very swollen. My back pain is being managed with physiotherapy now, but the diaphragm swelling is still there and it feels tight. What is the cause of this swelling?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history of fall from stairs, crush fracture and swelling in diaphragmatic area which I take as in upper abdomen that has persisted, physiotherapy is going on for back pain.
The most probable causes for swelling in the upper abdomen area s follows:
Hematoma or edema post-fracture of ribs can continue.
Traumatic hernia.
Muscles becoming flabby.
This can be diagnosed by the following ways:
Consult a General Surgeon for clinical examination.
Confirmation by high resolution ultrasonography and contrast enhanced CT scan of the affected area can give the most probable diagnosis and if hernia is present can be corrected by prolene mesh repair.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
