Does Sugar Intake Increase Triglyceride Level In Blood?

Sir, my mother is taking atocor 10 for the past 5 yrs n has cholesterol levels under control. Recently she was having chest pain and as per doctor advice she underwent cholesterol checkup which showed triglycerides level 280. Doctor advised her to reduce sugar intake as she consumes it more. Does sugar intake lesds to increase in triglycerides levels and can reducing consumption of sugar help in preventing chest pain if it is the main reason for high levels of triglycerides levels? Plz help m out..

Thank you for the query.
I would like to know your mother's age and whether she suffers from associated conditions like Diabetes mellitus and Hypertension.
Triglyceride are basically neutral fats composed of fatty acids and glycerol. Hypertriglyceridemia is a form of dyslipidemia and definitely contributes to Coronary artery disease and Fatty liver disease. The excess carbohydrates in our body are converted to fats (in simple explanation) and hence the restriction in sugar intake. Refined carbohydrates (for eg fast food), aerated beverages, saturated fat and alcohol intake should be restricted in Hypertriglyceridemia. Food with high glycemic index (like potato, white bread etc.) need to be avoided. Diabetes mellitus and obesity are also associated with increased triglyceride levels. It is recommended to have food with high fibre content.
If dietary control cannot be adequately achieved, medications need to be taken like fibrates (after consulting a physician).
Hope this helps you out.
