Does Strabismus Surgery Help In Treating Double Vision?

I am 47 and developed vision troubles about 41/2 years ago. I have worn contacts only for about the last 25 years to correct for nearsightedness. My eyes were unable to maintain focus. Now it has progressed to actual double vision occurring in close up and distance. It is not constant. Mostly the second half of the day. I am now seeing an Optometrist. My first visit a month ago gave measurements of 2-8 for prism and now from 6-14. I tried glasses with a 2 prism on the non-dominant eye worn over contacts. This did not help. I filled a prescription for just glasses to correct for nearsightedness. This did not help. Now I am trying a 6 prism on my prescription glasses left eye only. Just started this yesterday. She said that I will probably need surgery, but my eyes need to stabilize in the measurements. Question 1: I think that the levels are probably affected by variables that are not constant. Is there another way of measuring the level that is not dependent on whether or not I am having a particularly bad episode. Question 2: The article mentions eye exercises to strengthen the weak eye. What are these? Question 3: My doctor is going to refer me to another doctor that performs Strabismus surgery. Nothing was mentioned about using something to blur the vision in the better eye to strengthen the weak eye. If it is my dominant eye (which is my worse vision eye and the one that is turning in), can this treatment help? Question 4: Anything different that you would suggest?
