Does Normal Eye Get Affected In Person Suffering With Retinopathy Of Prematurity?

my son is 16 and over the past 3 months has has 3 retinal detachments and 2 subsequent surgeries. he has retinopathy of prematurity and I was first wondering how common it is that problems from ROP not show up until the teenage years and also, in Rop, what are the chances that his good eye will also start to develop issues?

Hi and welcome to HCM,
ROP, is a condition of the retina which is caused when premature babies are put on oxygen therapy for a long time after birth. Actually, in most hospital, such babies are routinely sent for retinal evaluation and advised regular followups. This way patients with ROP can be diagnosed early in life and appropriate treatment is initiated.
In your case maybe the above protocol was not followed, therefore the ROP was discovered later in life.
Regarding the good eye, you should have regular followup with a retinal specialist. Fortunately, there are many good treatment options available now, before the complications like retinal detachment occur.
All the very best health for you and your family!!!
