Does My USG Report Suggest Abortion?

As the doctor did not get the baby s heart beat and fetal pole from my recent USG after my 7+ weeks pregnancy, she suggested me to go for abortion immediately. She thinks it may cause great harm if I wait longer, particularly for my future pregnancy. However, I want to wait till 12 weeks and do USG again if there is no danger

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Absent fetal pole and fetal heartbeat on the ultrasound scan after 7 weeks of pregnancy usually indicate abortion.

If there is no fresh vaginal bleeding, severe lower abdomen cramps, it can be considered as missed abortion but many doctors recommend transvaginal ultrasound after a week to confirm/rule out an abortion, pregnancy.

If a similar patient comes to my clinic, I would recommend waiting for the bleeding for a week.

If the baby is detected in the follow-up ultrasound scan, there may not be much to worry about and close monitoring with regular follow up visits are important.

However, if baby is not detected, I would prescribe medications or recommend surgery for abortion based on the weeks of pregnancy.

It is not recommended to wait until 12th week of pregnancy when there is no fresh vaginal bleeding. Aborted baby in the uterus when left inside uterus can cause infection in the uterus which can cause serious complications. It may also hamper the next pregnancy sometimes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
