Does Intake Of Blood Thinners Cause Elevation In BP Levels?

My mother who is 53 years old just had a knee cap replacement surgery 3 days ago. She is on a blood thinner called warfarin sodium 5mg and Roxycodone 15mg. Her physical therapy nurse come out today an a home health nurse also. They checked her blood pressure several times and every time it was sky high. My question is could the blood thinner, warfarin, that she is taking causing her blood pressure to go up or what exactly could it be from...I am a very worried daughter about her and I would hate for something to happen severely with her bloood pressure being as high as it was. She was like in the prehypertension stage 2 if not higher...what could be causing it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

None of the medications you mention causes an increase in blood pressure. Most of the time (almost 90% of cases) there is no clear cause of high blood pressure and is called essential hypertension.

Some tests can be done to rule out certain causes of high blood pressure (electrolytes, creatinine, lipids, glucose, urinalysis, CBC, liver function tests, ECG/ heart ultrasound, etc). According to the results of these tests, the doctor will decide on the proper treatment for her.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
