Does Intake Of Alcohol Cause Side Effect While On Cymbalta And Vyavanse?

My 22 y/o daughter is away at college. She is on on vyavanse and cymbalta. Last night she drank alcohol. When she called me it was obvious to me that she was drunk. She doesn t remember any of our conversation last so apparently she blacked out. Can you please tell me the interactions between alcohol and these drugs and the dangers it presents. I would like to forward these to her.Thank you,A worried mom.

Dear Worried Mom,

I can understand your concern and your worries not out of place. Cymbalta and Vyvanse both have adverse effects of taking them with alcohol and contains risk of health and life individually and when these three are mixed together, effects are even more intensified. I will go through each medicine individually regarding its interaction with alcohol.

Let us talk about Cymbalta first: Drinking alcohol while taking Cymbalta makes Cymbalta less effective and thus its capacity to combat depression. As a result, this medicine may take longer time to cure the depressive symptoms of the patient. In addition, alcohol changes the sleep pattern which also makes depression worse.

Regarding Vyvanse, this medicine cures depression by stimulating brain. In contrast to that, alcohol slows down the brain activities by acting as a relaxing agent. Taking both of them together makes Vyvanse overshadow the effects of alcohol. Thus, a person taking Vyvanse feels less effects of alcohol compared to a person not taking Vyvanse. Having less effects of alcohol, the person tends to drink even more increasing risk of alcohol poisoning. The patient may keep drinking alcohol inadverently and may not even realize when alcohol poisoning symptoms set in thus creating a life threatening situation.

I would advise your daughter to focus on her health while taking antidepressants and stay away from alcohol indulgence.

I hope this answer helps you and your daughter. Let me know if you have follow up questions. Thank you for choosing HCM.

Best,
