Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Dear Dr, I have discovered that I have a genetic null polymorphism for NQO1 enzyme making me more susceptible to benzene poisoning and leukemia. Two years ago when I was in graduate school I worked with benzene sporadically ( mostly in fume hood but sometimes outside of it for a few minutes) and I have probably inhaled some amount. Now I am very worried that I will develop leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome. Should I be so concerned about this?

Does Inhalation Of Benzene Fumes Cause Leukemia?
Hello, Short exposure of benzene does not lead to leukemia even if you are genetically susceptible. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care Regards, Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
