Does Hypothyroidism In A Parent Cause Birth Defects In The Child?
My fiance has hashimoto s disease - hypothyroidism. She is currently taking 50 mcg of levothyroxine. We were planning on having children but we decided to hold since we ve heard that there is a chance of having children with birth defects. There was a study done in 2002 that shows a link between hypothyroidism and birth defects as seen in the link below: https://www.webmd.com/baby/news/0000/thyroid-disease-increases-birth-defects Does this study still hold true? We would not rather have any children if there is a possibility of birth defects.

Yes, patient with hypothyroidism is more chances to have a birth defect children rather than hyperthyroidism. Few studies have shown that 15 to 20% chances of increased defects of heart, kidney and brain.
So, if you are hypothyroidism with planning for baby please consult your endocrinologist he will examine and treat you accordingly.
