Does High Pressure In The Esophagus Cause Chronic Cough?
I have a chronic cough and have had all kinds of tests. Scopes to check the stomach and the lungs. The ph impedance 24 hour test and there is no sign of reflux. However the tests do show high pressures in the esophagus. How does the high pressures relate to the cough?
Hello and thank your for turning to HCM for your health concerns!
My answer is: Yes. High pressure in esophagus could cause chronic cough. Various scientific studies have established an association between chronic cough and esophagus pressure! Stimulation of esophagus in different abnormal ways could lead to chronic cough. On the other hand, chronic cough cause esophagus parameters to deteriorate further, thus creating some kind of vicious cycle. Because you have no signs of gastroesophageal reflux disease but you suffer from chronic cough, than the problem could be the high pressure in your esophagus (the term used in medicine for this condition is called achalasia). In this case, relieving esophagus pressure (pneumatic dilatation, for example, if this is the case) will help to get rid off the chronic cough. This is what literature on this subject suggests. Please consult once more with your doctors about this possibility. I wish you a quick recovery and good luck!
