Does Herpes Simplex Virus Cause Epstein–Barr Virus Infection?
My husband has been diagnosed with Parsonage Turner Syndrome after what appears to have been a case of mono - unknown whether an initial infection or recurrent. I ve been researching on the web and a number of people have mentioned a relationship between Epstein Barr and herpes. He has genital herpes. Could these two viruses be related?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Herpes viruses is family of viruses which includes both the genital herpes virus (usually herpes simplex virus type 2 but also the less common - for genital involvement - herpes simplex virus type 1) and Epstein-Barr virus. Other similar viruses are included in this family as well like cytomegalovirus (CMV), Varicella-Zoster-Virus (VZV) which causes chickepox and shingles and a couple of other less well-known viruses. This is the only relation between Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Herpes simplex virus (HSV) - they belong to the same family.
Having being infected by HSV does mean you're going to be infected by EBV (and vice-versa). So in conclusion, there is no clinically important relationship between these viruses.
