Does Head Trauma Causing Headaches Need Medical Attention?
my son has fallen and banged the back of his head, took a few seconds to get him to answer us after the fall. He seems ok now but has complained of a headache. Problem is its late for him and he naturally wants to go to sleep where I would rather observe him for a bit before he went to sleep. Do I need to take him to hospital, there has been no other symptoms eg sickness.
From your description of events your son has suffered what we refer to as a MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY (mTBI). The criteria for this diagnosis is based on his brief but measurable period of unresponsiveness which indicates a cessation of normal brain activity. The headache is postconcussive phenomenon. You are well advised to take him not only to the hospital but to have him seen by a neurologist who is well versed in concussion types of injury. He should have a good baseline evaluation of functioning so that IF something were to be amiss in the future there would be something to compare to in the past.
