Does Fatty Tumor In Shoulder Cause Shoulder Pain And Numb Fingers?

Hi Dr. Rynne, My husband has a fatty tumor on his left shoulder, the size of half of a soft ball. He has had this for years and it has not caused any problems but has gradually gotten larger. He is now having numbness in his left pinky and ring finger. Plus his shoulder aches. Can they remove these? Should he see a surgeon or Internal medicine?

Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, fatty tissue tumour (lipoma) on shoulder can cause local site pain and numbness in fingers.
Normally lipoma does not cause symptoms.
But when they enlarge, they cause compression to surrounding structures like nerves.
So pain is indication of enlargement of lipoma.
And this is also an indication for surgical removal of lipoma.
So better to consult surgeon and get done lipoma removal.
Once it is removed, his symptoms will also improve.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks.
