Does Extreme Pain In Abdomen Suggest Diverticulitis?

I have had,for almost one month, extreme pain in my lower left side directly after eating. I ve had, recently, a urinalysis, bloodwork, and been to ER for a ultrasonic scan of stomach, and a barium CT yesterday. They can t seem to find out what s wrong, I am under lots of stress at work at thought it might be diverticulitis but hospital drs. yesterday said that is out and also any urinary tract infection is out. What would you say about cancer in the stomach?

Hi! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

When all the tests mentioned by you came out to be normal, this compels me to think of possibility of coeliac disease/gluten sensitivity which goes very often unsuspected and missed. This is caused due to some kind of sensitivity/allergy of the intestinal mucosa to some component of the food you eat. This could be diagnosed with some biochemical tests and by exclusion and trial of food components in your diet. If I were your doctor, I would refer you to a dietician for this purpose to guide you on your diet. Apart from this, I would also advise you to add more of roughage and liquids to your diet, and avoid eating from outside specially the spicy, fried and fast food. Also I would advise you to get your stool tested for ova and cyst and get it treated if positive. Cancer is a remote possibility, but has to be excluded by your doctors. You could also get your self assessed by a gastro-enterologist for an endoscopic evaluation of your intestinal tract.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
