Does Extra Dosage Of Metformin Help To Regularize Menstrual Cycles?
hello I have been diagnosed with PCOS in Dec. 2015. I am trying to conceive. I RECENTLY HAD A DEPO SHOT BUT THE HOSPITAL DOUBLED IT TO STOP MY BLEEDING. NOW ITS MID FEB STILL NO PERIOD I AM TAKING METFORMIN 500MG. HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE FOR MY PERIOD TO COME BACK? WITH IRREGULAR PERIODS DO I HAVE TO TAKE MORE DOSAGE OF THE METFORMIN I REALLY WANT TO CONCIVE OR I WILL LOSE MY HUSBAND. THANK YOU FOR READING.
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Metformin has traditionally been used as an oral drug to help control diabetes. Since Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is associated with hyperinsulinemic state with relative insulin resistance, use of this drug could help to stabilize blood glucose and help in induction of ovulation, thus improving the chances of conception. However, it does not have any role to play to make menstrual cycles regular. This is taken care of by use of combined contraceptive preparations. Kindly consult Gynecologist or Infertility specialist for appropriate evaluation and management. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
