Does Delay In Treatment Of Hyperthyroidism Affect Thyroid Condition?
I was diagnosed with an over-active thyroid condition this morning. I started the beta blocker and now waiting to see an endocrinologist. We are booked to travel international for five weeks, leaving in two weeks. Is there any concerns I should have travelling before this condition is solved?
Hello and thank you for using HCM! I read your concern and i am trying to give you some informations. Once diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and started treatment oral medications you should be under medical supervision because the antythyroidien tablets may have some rare but dangerous side effects (they may lower the white blood cells and cause severe infections), usually their occur during the first 2 weeks. Than during the treatment you should measure in specific periods (depending on the grade of the hyperthyroidism) the thyroid hormones (FT4 and FT3) to see the efficiency of the given dose. Usually the treatment lasts 6-12 months, so i do recommend at least to travel in areas where the medical help is easily achievable. Hope i helped you somewhat.
Kind regards, Dr.M.Guni
