Does Daily Intake Of Gabapentin Cause Kidney Damage?

I take 3200mg of Gabapentin daily for Neuropathy pain. I ve had Neuropathy since 2002 and have been taking this much Gabapentin for approximately 6 yrs. Am I doing damage to my kidneys taking so much? I recently had hip replacement and my kidneys shut down for 3 full days following surgery and I was sleeping around the clock during that time. I just found out when I went in to have surgery my kidneys were not functioning to the top of their ability.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Gabapentin is not a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID) which can produce renal damage with long term use. So no worries from that point.
However if you have renal impairment the dose of the medicine has to be modified.
My recommendation is as below depending on the creatinine clearance (CRCL)
[>60 ml/min]: usual dosage

[30-59]: Dosage range: 400-1400mg/day
(divided doses )

[15-29]: Dosage range: 200-700mg/day.
