Does Being Overweight Cause Pain In Knees And Swelling In Ankles While Walking?

About two weeks ago I started walking/jogging nightly as an introduction to exercising. I am overweight and have not been very active in the past 4 years, so of course my muscles were sore the first few days. But on the fourth day my shins started hurting mildly while jogging I assumed it was just because I still wasn t used to the increased activity so I pushed through. I was a little sore the next day but decided to go for my jog anyway that night. Both knees began hurting but not wanting to give up I finished my route and the next day they were extremely sore while moving or while resting so I took a day to rest and picked back up again the next day but instead of jogging I only walked, and the pain has only gotten worse even though I have only been walking and lowered my mileage. I have been taking over the counter pain killers and icing both knees but it hasn t helped any. The pain has been constant for the past five days or so and today my right ankle was extremely swollen and tender to the touch but it wasn t before today. Both my knees and my right ankle seem to hurt when bearing any weight, going up or down stairs, walking, standing, or while resting.

Hello There

After going through your medical query I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that definitely being overweight can cause pain in knees and feet. But if you have started new workout then increase activity slowly and for initial days do it 5 days a week so that muscles can recover as well.

Hopefully this information will guide you properly.

Kind Regards
Dr Bhanu Partap
