Does Being On A Ventilator Cause Any Long Term Side Effects?

My 11 year old granddaughter had to be put on a ventilator after a tonsillectomy for a short while due to not having a gene enzyme to break down the drug used can there be a long term side effect from this with an irregular heart beat she did experience that right after the ventilator was removed.

Hello,

Post ventilator removal there will be vocal cords edema lead to hoarseness of voice or aspiration pneumonia or cough or breathing difficulty, etc. Irregular heartbeat may be due to drugs given during ventilator or respiratory acidosis or electrolyte imbalance or anxiety.
Until examination is done, it is difficult to say what it is.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu,
