Does Anesthesia Cause Stuffiness And Running Nose?

Thank you. I had Propofol anesthesia with oxygen via nasal cannula earlier today for colonoscopy procedure; however, by this evening I have such a runny nose and stuffiness. Seems almost like allergic rhinitis with allergies. Are the anesthetic and oxygen the reason and or side effects.?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

It is normal to have runny nose after anesthesia.
Oxygen administered during the procedure can be very drying to the nasal membranes.
The nasal membrane responds to this dryness by producing excess moisture.
A runny nose is not uncommon after the procedure, and will subside once the moisture is restored.

Hope my answer was helpful.

If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards!
