Does Acute Kidney Failure Affect Bowel Movements?

I am my mother s caregiver. She has been diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney failure and twice within the last two months went to ER with severe headaches. She is taking oxycodone and Tylenol on a daily basis. Over the last 4 days her bowels have changed in that she is not even aware that she needs to have a movement and when she goes to excrete it....it is not a formed stool, just a blob that does not drop. I am wondering if there could be any connection with toxin buildup from poor kidneys and now taking acetominephin daily. She never exceeds the daily dosage.

For those with kidney disease, being on dialysis and the associated diet and fluid restrictions may also alter bowel habits. Constipation causes stomach pain, bloating and nausea, while ongoing diarrhea can cause many problems, so it is important to manage your bowels well.

Suggested treatments: Depending on the severity of your bowel problem, your doctor may prescribe medication. A dietitian may be able to advise you on ways to safely increase the fibre in your diet. Gentle exercise also promotes regular bowel motions. You should talk to your health care team if your bowels continue to cause you concern as you may need to be referred to a specialist. Also both Oxycodon and Acetaminophen can cause constipation.
