Does A Large Uniformly Hypoechoic Lymph Node Is Seen In Axilla In Right Breast In Sonomammography Mean Cancer ?

Hi my mum is 54 year old .... Couple of days earlier she felt a lump in her right breast while taking a shower & went to her doctor right away ..... She is a diabetic (on insulin), high blood pressure & thyroid patient. Her doctor advised her to go for Mammography she got that done & the results are as follow :

RIGHT BREAST:

An opacity is noted in the outer and lower quadrant. It has well defined margins anteriorly.
However, posterior margins appears slightly indistinct in MLO view.
No micro or macro calcifications noted in any part of the breast. No vascular or ductal
calcification. No area of clustered micro calcification is noted. Skin and nipple are normal. Right
axilla is clear.

LEFT BREAST:

No dominant mass or mass like configuration is noted. No area of abnormal density or lucency
visualized. No micro or macro calcifications noted in any part of the breast. No vascular or ductal
calcification. No area of clustered micro calcification is noted. Skin and nipple are normal. Left axilla
is clear.

IMPRESSION:

Opacity right breast.
Right breast BIRAD 0, requires ultrasound correlation.
Left breast BIRAD 1.

Then she was advised to go for her sonomamography, she got that done too and the results are as follow:
Impression : A large uniformly hypoechoic lymph node is seen in axilla measuring 20.9 x17.4 mm--? Malignant
looking.

Today she went for her biopsy, & the results are awaiting till Jan 10th, 2014. We are so worried please help make me understand what is it all about ? I hope she doesn't have cancer or anything as she never felt any kind of symptoms.

Your answer is highly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi. The biopsy will clear the doubt whether it is cancer or not. Mammographu and sonomamography help to screen patients. In your mother case there is doubt that it can be a cancer. Most of the lumps in breast are not cancer, but we need to be sure. That is why we go for biopsy. Please also clarify, is she had biopsy or FNAC. I hope I have answered your query. If you have any other questions, I will be happy to help.
