Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is hard to assess the situation with the little info you provide. Back pain in itself most commonly is for benign reasons. It is unclear how long he has had it for and whether he's had any imaging for it. Usually the first step is rest and non-steroid antiinflammatory pain (NSAIDs) killers like for example Ibuprofen. Corticosteroid (prednisone is a corticosteroid) injections may be used to reduce inflammation in the form of local injections when NSAIDs do not work, they are not used orally and not as a first choice though.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
