General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing to HCM.
Pica is an eating disorder, characterized by an appetite for substances that are largely non-nutritive like paper, clay, metal, chalk, soil, glass or sand.
Complications may occur due to the substance consumed. It causes iron and vitamin B12 deficiency and hence one of the prime symptoms id iron deficiency anaemia.
For this you need to take supplements on a long term basis as prescribed by your doctor. Slowly, with behavioral change, you will fall back to normal.
Hope the information provided would be useful.
All the best.
