Does Meloxicam Cause Adverse Side Effects?

I haven t had any pain pills for at least 15 years. A doctor recently presribed 10 pills of 5% hydrocodone and 325% acetaminophen for a pain in my back that hurts very much making my left arm and 2 fingers so numb that can even crew a lid on a jar.....! Mean while I had to wait 2 weeks to see a physical therapist....! Analogy is that I have two dislocated ribs in my back... He tried to put them back in place with 3 different methods... No success... I will be seeing him 2 times a week for a month to try again....! I called my Doctor to get a refill because the pain is even worse....She now changed my pills to Meloxicam in which is for arthritis . The first pills worked and she denied me a refill of those because she said they are highly addictive....The Meloxicam side effects say that more people are likely to have a heart attack taking this drug and die in the year after the heart attack then people not taking drugs like this one. I am 57 years old... and why I would be denied of something that worked for the pain versus giving me something that is life threatening...... Does any body have a professional opinion that could shed some light on this.... Thank you, I m Here in Alaska ,, Rick

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Meloxicam has side effects like Stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or diarrhea.

If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor promptly. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

This medication may raise your blood pressure. Get your BP checked regularly.

Other adverse effects include easy bruising/bleeding, persistent/severe headache, mental/mood changes, signs of kidney problems (such as a change in the amount of urine), unexplained stiff neck, symptoms of heart failure (such as swelling ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, unusual/sudden weight gain).

This drug may rarely cause serious (possibly fatal) liver disease.

Get medical help right away if you have any symptoms of liver damage, including dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting/loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
