Does Lexapro Cause Atrial Fibrillation?

I have a history of a fib. My first episode was in Oct of 2013. On April 10th I saw my primary doctor as a follow up and mentioned I was dealing with a lot of anxiety. He prescribed me Lexapro 10mg a day. On Monday I went back in to a fib. Is it possible that the lexapro caused the a fib?

Hello! Thank you for your question on HCM! Regarding Laxepro (escitalopram) it is true that it predisposes to QTc prolongation on ECG and as a consequence predisposes for ventricular arrhythmia (Extra-systoles, Ventricular tachycardia, Torsade de pointes), and also may cause atrial fibrillation.
Nevertheless I recommend you to talk with ypu doctor (psychiatrist) for a safer option such as fluoxetine, paroxetine.
Hope to have been helpful. Greetings. Dr. Iliri
