Does Isotroin Cause Side Effects Like Hair Loss, Rashes And Skin Damage?

Hello! I m Sunny. I m 20 years old. I have several acne and cystic acne on my cheeks. I visited Apollo, Chennai, there the Dr had initially prescribed me a DerivaMS Gel and a Salicylic Foam face-wash. After 10 days, the Dr has prescribed ISOTROIN 20mg and I came to know from many people about the serious side effects of ISOTROIN 20mg like hair loss, rashes, damage to skin. Due to the fear of side effects I ve still not started having ISOTROIN. Can anybody please give exact details of its side effects as I m worried about my hair a lot.

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Dermatologists all round the world have been using Isotretinoin for acne with consistently reproducible results.
Minor reversible side effects like cheilitis, dry skin are common and usually the only side effects of Isotretinoin treatment. Increased hair shedding is a side effect in some but not all.
Other side effects like minor elevations of liver enzymes, elevations of serum triglycerides are reversible and usually don't warrant discontinuation of treatment. Nevertheless they should be monitored in patients on Isotretinoin treatment.
The most concerning issue about Isotretinoin is that it is teratogenic i.e it can adversely affect the fetus, therefore retinoids are either avoided altogether in females of reproductive age group Or can be given only if adequate contraception is assured.
Apart from the adverse effect on pregnancy, Isotretinoin can be assumed to be fairly safe for treatment of acne.
Finally, there have been few reports of suicides in patients on Isotretinoin but that is because the patient were already of suicidal tendency either because of severe acne or other psychological problems. On the contrary Isotretinoin improves the quality of life of acne patients and has a positive impact on psyche and the way the patients perceive themselves.
In my view Isotretinoin brings remarkable improvement in severe acne and is considered to be a magical treatment of acne.
They is specially of benefit in acne patients who had lost all hope for an effective curative remedy for acne.

Regards
