Does Invokana In A Diabetic Cause Renal Failure?

My brother-in-law has diabetes, congestive heart failure, and renal problems. His doctor in Houston said that the medicine, Invokana, caused his renal failure. I have not found anything on the web showing that. Is there a problem with the medicine Invokana?

Hello,

Invokana is canagliflozin an oral hypoglycemic agent used in type 2 diabetes. The following are adverse effects caused by Invokana:

1) Female genital mycotic infections (10.4-11.4%)
2) Urinary tract infections (4.4-5.9%)
3) Increased urination (4.6-5.1%)
4) Male genital mycotic infections (3.8-4.2%)
5) Thirst (2.4-2.8%)
6) Constipation (1.8-2.4%)
7) Nausea (2.1-2.3%)
8) Volume depletion

Postmarketing reports
1)Ketoacidosis
2)Acute kidney injury
3) Anaphylaxis
4) Angioedema
5) Urosepsis
6) Pyelonephritis
7) Necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum (Fournier’s gangrene)

So it is true that Invokana can lead to kidney dysfunction. It is contraindicated in dialysis patients. Ask your prescribing physician about the above mentioned adverse effects on kidney so that he can prescribe an alternative drug.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
