Does Griseofulvin Have Any Effects On The Semen Quality?

Hi, I am a 40 year old man and I just took Griseofulvin 500mg/one daily for two week. While taking it I read that I should wait 6 months before fathering a child. I understand that Griseofulvin could effect sperm adversely. Why would I be in the clear to father a child in 6 months, not 3 months or a year? Please explain the scientific basis of waiting 6 months? Can I be sure the adverse effect of Griseofulvin on my sperm will be completely gone by then? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Griseofulvin medication is used to treat fungal infections of hair, nails and skin. Griseofulvin is known to interfere with chromosome segregation by binding to microtubule-associated proteins. By this effect, Griseofulvin can induce Aneuploidy (numerical chromosome abnormalities) at therapeutic concentrations in germ cells. Hence, it would be better to wait for 6 months or more if you are planning to be a parent.

Hope I have answered your query.
