Does GERD Lead To Pain In Shoulder Blade, Collar Bone Or Rib Cage Area?

Hello Dr Grief,

I have a few questions. I am a female and former college athlete (basketball) in really good shape.
I have a pulse rate of 60 bpm, very good blood pressure at 117/72 (or something around that range),
with no signals in my blood that may cause some concern.
Yet I have this dull ache in my left shoulder blade that radiates to my chest, right below my collarbone.
I have had several ekgs this past summer and an echo exam about a month ago.
Everything came back normal.
I also experience some stomach and chest burning and was told I have GERD.
Does GERD affect these areas, causing pain?
There is pain also on the left side right below my rib cage area.
I have a bit of tingling in my chin and throat too.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

Considering the fact that your EKG and ECHO are within normal limits, any Cardiovascular pathology is ruled out.
Under such circumstances, the symptoms can be attributed to GERD.
Medical management consists of intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole, Omeprazole, etc. which prevent acid formation in stomach.

Additional management involves:
1. Intake of Domperidone preparations which strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux.
2. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
3. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult your treating Doctor/ Gastroenterologist.
Investigation like Ultrasound scan of abdomen & Upper GI endoscopy will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Wish you a good health.
Take care.
