Does Cellcept Suppress The Symptoms Of Fever?

I am on Cellcept, 3,000 mg. per day to suppress my immune system because I have a rare autoimmune disorder that has attacked the retina of my eyes, causing blindness in one eye. My question is, I have heard that a person doesn t indicate having a fever because of being on the Cellcept. Is this accurate?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It does not suppress the symptoms of fever. Cellcept (Mycophenolate) is an immunosuppressive agent commonly prescribed to lower the body's natural immunity in patients who receive organ transplants (eg, kidney, heart, or liver) and certain autoimmune diseases.

It can temporarily lower the number of white blood cells in your blood, which increases the chance of getting an infection. Because it suppresses your immune system, your body may not be as effective at fighting off infection, so there's a high risk of getting various infections resulting in fever, sore throat, cough or urinary symptoms.

So, in view of the above, you need to have regular blood tests such as CBC, liver, and kidney function tests while taking Cellcept.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
