Does Arava Increase The Risk Of Liver Damage?

My sister, age 72 was diagnosed last year with RA. She has been on prednisone, but her dr. started her on Arava about 3 months ago. She s concerned about the effect it could have on her liver, because she was hospitalized for 10 days last December with hemorrhaging from her liver. Does the Arava pose an increased risk for liver damage or other liver disorders/

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Usually, liver damage is caused even by taking other meds before starting Arava. However, there are studies confirming Arava causing liver injuries as she has a previous history of liver hemorrhage.

So need to discuss this with her caring doctor. Plus need close monitoring by her caring doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
