Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, i have a very regular cycle (28 days) and we are currently trying for our second baby. I had a cold during the month that turned into a chest infection and took Amoxil 500 mg for 5 days a week before my period was due. i m now 6 days late for period but pregnancy test is negative. i have had mild cramping but no major symptoms. Would the antibiotics definitely delay my period or could i still be pregnant?
The most common cause of missed period in women is pregnancy. There are chances you could be pregnant and I doubt a short course of antibiotics interfering with your cycle. As you have mentioned that it is just 6 days past your expected date of your cycle, I would suggest you to wait till 12th or 14th day and try the pregnancy test again. This is because the test is most sensitive around this time point.
Unless you have major symptoms you can wait and monitor the changes yourself. The abdominal cramps might be due to the hormonal changes that generally occurs at the end of cycle.
Even if your second pregnancy test turns out negative then you can visit your gynecologist who can order a blood pregnancy test that can give you an accurate result.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Manoj Pradeep
