Does Amoxicillin Affect The Efficacy Of Birth Control Pills?
I went to a walk in clinic and was prescribed amoxicillin. I hear it effects birth control. I m currently a week in on my set of pills (aviane). Last Friday night I had unprotected sex which is usually okay because of the pill. Is it safe to start my medication or should I wait a few days I don t want to risk pregnancy.

You have been advised right.. Amoxicillin can affect the effectiveness of OCP and there are reported cases of contraceptive failure with amoxicillin though only a handful in the literature. Amoxicillin intereferes with the metabolism of the birth control pills to some extent. There are alternatives to amoxicillin like azithromycin, levofloxacin which are less likely to have this proble.
If I were treating you I would suggest a second form of contraceptive besides oral pills to be 100% sure of protection when you are on antibiotics. .
