Does Alesse Have A Suitable Alternative For Treating PCOS?

Hello Dr. Rynne, I have been taking Alesse since I was 16. I have PCOS. Alesse 21 is unavailable where I live and I have been trying to find a viable alternative to use. Can you make any suggestions? It seems like the difficulty is finding a birth control with progesteron

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Alesse 21 is a combined preparation, which helps in regulating menstrual cycles (even in PCOD.) It does not have a specific role in treating PCOD.

You would need complete investigation range to confirm the diagnosis (usg pelvis and hormonal assay as per need) followed by specific management, which includes ovulation stimulation, diet and exercises, control of insulin resistance/laparoscopic surgery of drilling of collected non-ovulated cysts to result in normal shape of ovary (which in turn restarts normal hormonal cycle for menstruation.)

Please consult a gynecologist/endocrinologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
