Does Acitretin Affect The Fertility In Women?

ok. I have one question. My doc suggested me to take acitretin 10 mg daily once For 2 months. With the combination of other supporting medecines for my scalp n body psoriasis. I am getting married in one year. I read some information regarding this medicine-acitretin. internet is saying it may reduce the fertility in woman. I dont want to face any issue regarding my pregnency in future. Please tell me if he is treating me with a right medecine or not. I actually have bad psoriasis in scalp n very very little in joints of my legs. Thats it

Acetretin belongs to the group of retinoids which is used to treat severe psoriasis.
It does not reduce fertility. The problem with it is it may cause severe fetal abnormalities if used during pregnancy.
If you take acetretin you should avoid pregnancy for THREE YEARS after stopping acetretin. Therefore you need to start using contraception from one month before your marriage. You should use effective contraception like combined contraceptive pill or intrauterine contraceptive devise upto three years after stopping the treatment.Do not use mini pill ( progesterone only pill) as acetretin interferes with its action. Anytime you miss your period check for pregnancy test and discuss with your doctor
Another important information you need to know is you should not take alcohol beverages while on this medicine and upto two months after stopping the treatment.
Discuss with your doctor about benefits and risks and decide whether you wish to take this medicine.
