Do Weight Gain And Elevated TSH Levels Indicate Hypothyroidism?

I am a 37 yo active female. Three months ago I had the right side of my thyroid removed due to a large benign nodule. Six weeks post-op my TSH level was 4.3. My endocrinologist reported my levels were fine . Soon after I began gaining weight. I gained 8 lbs with diet and exercise in about a 6 weeks, so I insisted a re-check. My most recent check shows a TSH level of 4.08 and a free T4 level of 0.80 (normal). Although, I am am gaining weight and my TSH levels are considered high, she wants to wait and check again in 6 months before she treats me for hypothyroidism. Is this typical? Does a high TSH level ALWAYS indicate hypothyroidism?

Hello, Thanks for using Healthcaremagic. i had gone through the data you have posted. though you have gained weight your TSH is within the normal range so it cannot be attributed to hypothyroidism.
secondly as you have undergone Hemi thyroidectomy, chance of devleloping hypothyroidism may not be very high.
so continue diet and physical exercise.
hope this helps..
