Do Thrashing Around On Bed During Sleep Suggest Restless Leg Syndrome?
My husband thrashes around in bed and has broken two lamps with his arms flailing. Ususally he will pull the top sheet out and twist the covers. About 10 years ago he had viral meningitis and had one seisure then. Could he have restless leg syndrome or seisures or what else?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Sudden onset thrashing movements during sleep in bed can occur due to some sleep related disorders. Restless leg syndrome is one possibility. In restless leg syndrome individuals usually report self and have discomfort in legs during sleeping. Other possibility is some myoclonic jerks. In myoclonic jerks sudden onset jerky or thrashing movements occurs during sleep also called as nocturnal myoclonic jerks. Some seizure is also a possibility. I'd advise you to visit a psychiatrist for proper evaluation and treatment. Sleep studies and EEG during sleep can help in making a proper diagnosis.
Drugs like Gabapentin or Pregabalin can help to reduce the restlessness and jerky movements. Please visit a doctor for prescription of these drugs.
Thanks, I hope this helps you. Take care
