Did Gargling Make My Vocal Chords Dry And Inflamed?

Hi, I have a bad throat and am taking medication. Besides the medications I did some saltwater gargling last night! Today my voice is almost gone! I think I used way too much salt for gargling! I think my vocal chords are dried up and inflamed. Do you think my voice problem is because of those gargles? If yes, then should I wait till tommorow to see if I get my voice back to normal or contact a doctor?

Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.

Looking at your symptoms, you are probably suffering from inflammation in the throat-pharyngitis and voice-box(larynx)-laryngitis resulting in throat pain and almost loss of voice. It can't be as a result of gargling.Actually,it will help.

You may find relief by taking the following medicines:
Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen ,Antacid like Rantac,Antihistamininc like Cetrizine.

Also do warm saline gargles.Do steam inhalation.Drink lots of warm fluids.Avoid cold, oily and spicy food.Avoid dust.Take voice rest.Speak only if it is necessary.Don't shout or whisper.

If you suffer from symptoms like high grade fever, pus discharge from cough, severe pain in the throat leading to difficulty in swallowing, etc suggestive of bacterial infection, then it would be advisable to start Oral Antibiotics after consulting Otolaryngologist Doctor.

Hope this answers your question.Take care.
