Diagnosed With Multilevel Degenerative Disc Disease. Hyperactivity Of Marrow. Low Iron.

I was diagnosed with multilevel degenerative disc disease a year ago. I suffered for years with chronic severe anemia and joint pain treated as arthritis. My last MRI in September 2012 shows continued degeneration, several buldging discs. My cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine are involved. The MRI showed several hypo and hyperactivity of my marrow. Aside from low iron blood tests by hemo Oncologist were pretty normal. New complete spinal MRI tomorrow. Should the damaged marrow show improvement since they say I all of a sudden I am no longer amemic.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.
As you have said, previous MRI showed several bulging dicsa at cervical, thoracic and lumbar levels with associated dengenerative changes. Also going by the MRI findings, there is hypo and hyperactivity of marrow.
Now, in plain terms, the bone marrow at childhoold is red marrow and helps in formation of blood cells. As age progresses, this red marrow is transformed into yellow marrow with fat replacement. In disease where there is decread blood in the human body, the marrow once again is activated to generate blood cells.
In your situation if the anaemia is improving then the marrow may show signal changes on MRI.
Please revert back with your present MRI scan report if you have further doubts.
Hope this helps.
