Diagnosed With Hyperactive Thyroid, Gained Weight, Bloated Tummy, Very Tired. What Do I Do?

Hi there, I was diagnosed with hyperactive thyroid about 6 months ago and have been on carbimazole since. I take 5 mg everyday now - one tablet a day at night after dinner. My most recent blood test showed normal levels but I have been asked to continue my medication until December this year. I have not really gained weight as I still weigh the same, but have gone up half a dress size and feel really bloated around my tummy and very tired. What do I do?

hello there!
you said hyperactive thyroid but for what reason?
there are many and can be confirmed by investigations. so how deeply have you been investigated so far? ofr just the thyroid function tests and started on carbemazole. dont you wanna know what could be the reason for your active thyroid?
if you do. then
do autoantibodies tests like anti TPO, TSI

if the cause is still not sure

do the iodine uptake scintigraphy scan. radio active iodine uptake it is both diagnostic and therapeutic by ablation . dpo an ecg if you have palpitations and start 40 mg propanolol.

now lets add some care to your carbemazole

1)use saline eye drops as needed and tight sunglasses for out doors.
2)if eyes are severely affected , use high dose glucocorticoids like deltacortil and consider orbital decompression surgery.
3)continue the carbemazoles for 12 to 18 months, remember remissions are common and surgery is a better option once your leels become normal or you become euthyroid.
4) radiactive iodine ablation can also be used.

cheers and good luck
Dr Khan
