Delayed Periods, Weight Loss, Disturbed Sleep, Sweating And Parched Mouth After Taking Vyvanse. Is This Normal?

I started taking vyvanse a little over a month ago. I've lost around 10 lbs since starting the medication due to the fact that I can't eat anything. I get hungry but then I take one or two bites of food and I'm completely full. I've also noticed that my period is late this month (not sexually active). I've had spotting on occasion and that is it. I started taking 50 mg vyvanse yesterday (it was 30 mg prior) and I did not sleep at all last night. I've also noticed that my mouth and throat are severely dry as well as an increase of the production of sweat. I am 25 years old and I currently weigh about 153 lbs. I am 5'8". Are these symptoms going to continue for the duration of my taking this medication? Are these normal?

Hi,
Vyvanse is a drug acting on central nervous system, used for atteintion deficit hyperactvity disorder. It is known to cause loss of appetite, loss of weight & sleeplessness. The weakness caused therefore results in physical psychological stress, resulting in hormonal imbalance& menstrual irregularity.
The point of concern is you are increasing the dose. Some times the side effects tapper down as the body gets adjusted to the medicines.
Still,I would advice you to consult your consultant for continuation of the same medicine as advised/ is there any need to reassess the drug schedule.
Thanks.

General & Family Physician Dr. Haseena Hamdani's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to Health Care Magic,
Are you taking this medicine for ADHD? I hope that your Doctor has ruled out any other disorder before starting this medication. Disturbed sleep and sweating can happen as a side effect of this medicines. other side effects could also be due to this medicine, but not so commonly. These symptoms could also be due to hormonal disorders specially hyperthyroidism. Make sure that you are taking this medicine in the morning with food.
Do not increase the dose if you are getting these side effects. The whole purpose of starting this medication with small dose and increasing gradually is to avoid the side effects and get the maximum benefits. You must go and see the Doctor, and to review the dosage of your medicines. Your weight is fine in respect of your age and height.
