Dark, Cloudy, Old Smelling Urine, Pain While Urinating, Frequent Urination. Any Ideas?

For the past week I have had really dark, cloudy, strong/old smelling urine. I don't drink cokes. I drink about 6 8oz bottles of water a day and an occasional sweet tea. I don't smoke, drink, do drugs or anything. About a year ago ago I was in the urologists in and out for two years. They never could figure out what was wrong. I had really bad pain while peeing, frequent urination, bladder sensitive to the touch, and bright red blood in my urine. Every once in awhile there would be brown thick pieces of mucous in my pee. I've had scopes and xrays done and they found nothing. It dissapeared randomly. But when all that first started it was exactly what I am experiencing now. Would you have any idea what could be going on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

Your description does match that of an infection of your urinary tract, a sexually transmitted disease or obstruction/compression of your urinary tract or renal system (mostly by a stone).

I understand it can be frustrating when doctor's don't find a cause for your trouble, this mostly happens when either the patients symptoms are deceiving or when they are not looking in the right places.

As you have not mentioned the following investigations, I would advise them. You could write back to me with the results and I could guide you from there on. They are:
-Urine culture and sensitivity examination
-Screening for sexually transmitted diseases
-Ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis (with special emphasis on renal system, uterus, ovaries, and other surrounding structures)
-A vaginal swab can also be conducted

I request your patience, as the investigations conducted previously are quite conclusive, and if they have not reported anything, it does lead to frustration, but let us start over and with the basic tests for now. We shall soon find the cause and relieve you of your trouble.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
