Damaged Toe Nail Oozing Foul Smelling Liquid. Is This An Infection?

Hello,

The nail from my big left toe was a little bit too long and got stuck on some material the other day which caused me to have it rip partially off two days ago. The nail itself is still intact however it has unstuck partly from the root below. Today, the same thing happened again leading it to bleed and throb. I have put peroxide on it, however the liquid oozing from the beneath the nail smells horrible. Does that mean its infected? And if so, what should I do?

Also, I am supposed to play hockey tomorrow. When the toe is taped, the pain is not big enough to stop me from playing, but should I be abstaining anyway?

Thanks for your time and help.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic,
From the description it looks like infection. I recommend you to see a doctor and start a course of antibiotics. Fully avulsing the partially avulsed nail is a good option if your doctor is competent to do it. I will advice you to take rest and not play hockey for faster recovery.
Hope this helped,
Take care.
