Could The Foul Smell In The Bowels Be Due To Infection Of The Small Intestine?

I have been farting quite often for the last seven days and occasionally with foul smell. Even the bowel movement have become erratic. I have clean diet and eat a lot of apples, bananas every day. I am 50 years old. I take three meals a day. I do not take much of milk products and do not take coffee /tea/alcohal. Could this probably be due to any mild infection in the small interstine ?
