Could The Falling A Side Effect Of The Extended Treatment With Coumadin?
A friend of mine has been on coumadin for many years secondary to 2 strokes when he was in his 50 s. He now is 82 and has twice fallen and passed out. His LOC doesn t last long, and after the first episode all tests were negative for stroke or bleeding. He also has general muscle weakness. My question is: could this falling could be a side effect of the extended treatment with coumadin? I do know people who have improved mobility, less instability, and more mental clarity after their coumadin was discontinued from GI bleeding....even at this advanced age.

Yes coumadin can cause many side effect on extended long term uses. One of them is dizziness, and fainting. As per your explaination your patient age was 85 and it is common to have side effects at this age. For this I always suggest all my patient to check with the neuro physician regularly on medication dosage update. Here coumadin is basically containing warfarin which is blood thinner for our body and it is needed after having stroke or heart problem to avoid blood clotting in brain blood vessels and to reduce pressure from heart. But the dosage has to be changed when needed. There are many other side effect also present when taken in overdose. You will get further detail in internet so check out. I am sure you have got your answer here. Take care.
