Could Taking Xanax Increase The Anxiety Level?

My mother has cancer. She has been given a small dose of Xanax three times/day. I see her anxiety level increase as the time approaches for her next dose. I have wondered why she isn t given Xanax ER instead of three doses/dy. The doctor just ignores the question. In the past a doctor put me on Xanax (before ER was available. I noticed that as time approached for my next dose, I felt as if I was climbing the walls. We stopped Xanax and went to Klonopin which didn t cause the same reaction. Mom is 87. Should Xanax ER be considered? She is experiencing the same type of reaction that I did. I am also a nurse. Thank You

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
I appreciate your concern for your mother.
She is habituated to Xanax as is expected of benzodiazepines and becomes anxious as the blood level reaches a trough. This can be avoided to some extended with extended release forms where the peak to trough ratio is less.
May be the doctor would agree to your gentle suggestion next visit.
Best wishes,
Dr. Noble Zachariah
