Could Symptoms Of Hyperparathyroidism Cause Elevated Blood Pressure?

I am a 58 year old female Caucasian. I have an elevated PTH of 100 (lab normal up to 88) and a calcium level tested twice in the last month at 9.8 and 10.2 (lab normal up to 10.2) but I did have a level of 10.6 several years ago with a PTH at the very upper limit of normal. A thyroid ultrasound 2 weeks ago showed multiple subcentimeter colloid cysts but did not mention anything about possible parathyroid. I have elevated blood pressure that until recently has been controlled with 20mg lisinopril daily. In the past month, my blood pressure is fluctuating from my normal (=/- 135/85) to as high as 169/112. It will stay elevated for 2-3 days, then go back to normal. I recently had a severe headache and have had periods of shortness of breath on normal exertion. No other abnormal lab work, or other physical findings. Looking over the list of common symptoms of primary hyperparathyroidism, I seem to have most of them with the exclusion of kidney stones, including hair loss on the crown, difficulty concentrating, loss of memory, hair loss on the crown anxiety and fatigue, the most bothersome and life impacting being the fatigue and loss of memory. Many of the symptoms we were ascribing to chemo that I had about 6 years ago for ovarian cancer. My most recent scans and blood tests do not indicate a return of the cancer at this time. I am going to a large clinic in the Seattle area. My physician chatted an endocrinologist associated with the clinic who is 1) not sure that I have parathyroid issue, and 2) even if I do, that he does not believe that the parathyroid has anything to do with the blood pressure issues I am experiencing. My referral appointment to endocrinology is not for another month. My questions: Could a parathyroid issue be responsible for fluctuating blood pressure and/or other symptoms described? What finding is alerting the endocrinologist to feel that I most likely do not have a parathyroid issue? Any suggestions for other causes for my symptoms that my family doctor could pursue? I appreciate any insight you could offer.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, parathyroid and BP are related often, hyper-parathyroid patients show high BP. Parathyroidectomy can relieve in some patients BP problems, but risk to benefit ratio is always seen. Check if you come into that category or not. I will suggest you to take these tests [1,25 dihydoxy-vitamin D], CRCL, 24 hr urinary cal excretion.

Diet should include berries, kale and yogurt (which are good) otherwise, strengthen immune system by fruits, vegetables, salads and lots of water [7-8 glasses]. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking, non-veg. Breathing exercise and sukshm yoga can physiologically control blood pressure, before other things join it [online art of living ombw or happyness workshop], it shows good results in similar history patients.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
