Could Swelling In Knee And Shin Be Treated By Icing It?
Hi, I fell over on a hike last week and within an hour I had a huge swelling under my knee on my shin( size of a golf ball). I iced it immediately and used Hirudoid cream that I got from the pharmacy, but there is still a hard lump and I can't bear to kneel or have it touched. My knee bends fine. But my shin feels hot, itchy and very sore. Thanks Deborah

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. From description it seems to be soft tissue injury . Large lump might be due to haematoma formation(collection of blood). You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury. I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
